HAMPSHIRE DOWN NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIP AT CASTLEWELLAN

The launch of the National Hampshire Down Championship at Castlwellan Show from left Ian Craig, Northern Bank, John McCauley, Committee Member, Roy Graham, Chairman of Sheep Committee at Castlewellan Show, Debbie Reid, Northern Bank, Michelle McCauley, Chairperson and Victoria McFadden of the Hampshire Down Committee.
Castlewellan Show on Saturday 16th July will host the inaugural National Hampshire Down Championship which has been very kindly sponsored by Northern Bank.
There will be the usual individual classes, with the addition of a group of four class consisting of a shearling ram or older, shearling ewe or older, ram lamb and a ewe lamb, there is also a new novice class open to members who have not won a lst place at a previous Castlewellan Show.
With increased interest in the Hampshire Down breed over the past few years, there has been a considerable number of new flocks established.
Club Chairman Michelle McCauley commented “that there is sure to be stiff competition in all the classes from new and established breeders, with members expected to travel from all parts of the Province to take part.”
Judge for the occasion is Mr. Patrick Cokelaere, National President of the Belgian Association.
This special National Championship is not to be missed for anyone interested in Hampshire Downs as this is guaranteed to attract some of the top sheep in Northern Ireland. There will be a large selection of breeding rams on show and many of these will be entered in the Northern Bank Sponsored Premier Show and Sale held at an evening sale at Ballymena Mart on Mon 1st August. For those considering lambing a proportion of their flock in January, this is a sale not to be missed. At our annual Spring Lamb Competition held in April at Rathfriland Mart, spring lambs sold to a record price of £175.
There has been a growing interest in breeding females over the last number of years and the Club plans to hold a Second special export evening sale at Hilltown Mart on Friday 16th September kindly sponsored by Thompson Animal Feeds. There will be on offer a number of in lamb ewes which will be scanned prior to the sale. As in previous years there will be a good selection of ewe lambs. A number of rams and ram lambs will also be available, this will provide an ideal opportunity for March lambing commercial producers to source their rams.
The Hampshire Down members will also be manning a stand at the NSA Sheep Event on Monday 4th July at Ballymena Mart and would invite anyone that is interested in finding out more about the breed, to visit the stand.
